The Toyota Yaris is a compact passenger car developed for urban and everyday driving. It has been sold primarily as a small hatchback, with sedan versions offered in some markets under the same name. Across its generations, the Yaris has used compact three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, while hybrid powertrains became an important part of the range. Most versions use a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. The car is known for its relatively small exterior dimensions, which make it easy to manoeuvre and park in busy cities. Its interior packaging makes practical use of the available space, despite the short body. Equipment, suspension settings and safety systems vary considerably between markets and generations. Toyota also used the Yaris name for more powerful derivatives, but those performance cars differ substantially from the ordinary versions in engine, chassis and drivetrain specification. The mainstream Yaris remained focused on low running costs, straightforward handling and everyday usability rather than outright performance. As a result, the name covers a broad range of compact Toyota hatchbacks rather than one single technical specification.
